But sometimes, we have to claw.
And it started…there was blood in my spit as I was running for gym class. The other girls made fun of me: I was weak, I was sick, I had cancer. Two kinds. I was embarrassed. I was frightened.
As I lied in my hospital bed, my surgeon sat beside me eating the M&Ms I'd received as a gift because I couldn't eat them.
I passed out hours after a painful bone test. Over 60 stitches in my stomach. I threw up Big Red on the side of the Houston highway after treatment on my way home to Corpus Christi.
My family sacrificed over and over and over again.
But then I survived.
And had to claw my way back to living.
