If this doesn't put you in the proper Thanksgiving mood, you're a cave-dwelling creature with a heart two sizes too small!
What a beautiful, beautiful story.
EMPATHY, EMPATHY, EMPATHY. That's the order of the day.
I'm not quite sure that "If you have to choose between being right and being kind, choose kind" is 100% right minded (nor do I think Dr. Howard Johnson would, or any scientist), but, alas, I do think there's an opportunity for more kindness in most things. Ahem, D.C., I'm talking to you.
Lauren and I worried Wonder would be schlocky sentimentality with a triple-heaping of maple syrup, but it's not. It feels more heroic than that, in a Mr. Holland's Opus, Stand and Deliver, Dangerous Minds, Dead Poets Society, The Emperor's Club, Pygmalion Effect sort of way. (Well, not *quite* as good as any of those, but better than, say, some watered-down/after school/Disney sorta special.)
It's a lovely film for a family to see together, particularly in this #choosekind / anti-bullying era. I think more schools should award the "Henry Ward Beecher Medal," which "honors students who have been notable or exemplary, and whose quiet strength has carried up the most hearts."
What a glorious idea.
I think we can all get behind that.
Can I get an amen?
