Here's what I wrote before the film:
Second only to Wakanda Forever, every time I see the trailer for The Woman King, I get goosebumps and wanna rise to my feet and punch the air.
It looks SO. GOOD.
Cannot wait.
Tick-tock!!
And here's after:
Well gosh darn it, I know how much this film meant to Viola Davis, especially given her regret for her role in The Help, so it was tough reading the Twitterverse absolutely tear her apart the day after The Woman King's opening in spite of so many historical inaccuracies.
I wondered during the end-credits why no factoids appear, especially given the film's earlier trailer implying that it was based on real female warriors.
Turns out some of that is true, and most of it's not, all of which feels wrong.
At a minimum, the trailer was misleading, and that's a shame, because I was pumped.
The film itself, however, is first class and wildly entertaining and motivating. Just bummed it wasn't particularly true.
