The trailers alone FLOORED me.
I was also eager to see Hong "We gel!" Chau from The Menu sparkle in yet another pivotal role.
It's a beautiful film based on a play, equal parts compassionate and raw from beginning to end.
A must-see if one LOVES cinema, though 'entertaining' is not the right word to describe it. More like 'meaningful' or 'to be respected,' taking on love and loss like it does, but no, not 'date night' fare.
Brendan Fraser and Hong Chau will in all likelihood be nominated for Oscars in their respective categories, and I look forward to seeing who their competition is.
It could be that The Whale proves 'such an obvious choice' that the Academy opts instead for some dark horse, so stay tuned for that possibility!
