Precisely the sort of film Ben Affleck should do more of, and it's my understanding that he will. The Way Back (which preceded this in 2020) was beautiful, and I'm ready for more of its ilk.
Based loosely on J.R. Moehringer's 2005 memoir, The Tender Bar follows the journey from J.R.'s uncle's bar and graduating Yale to becoming a full-fledged writer, much as he dreamed—having now published Andre Agassi's autobiography, Open, the novel Sutton, Phil Knight's memoir, Shoe Dog, and the story leading to the film Resurrecting the Champ about an L.A. homeless man who claimed to be heavyweight boxing great, Bob Satterfield.
The Tender Bar is definitely tender, and newcomer Daniel Ranieri (with eyelashes to spare) is adorable.
