This is a very difficult movie to watch. Not for the faint of heart. Bullies turn me into Billy Jack + Bruce Banner, and The Nightingale is 144 minutes of bullying with very little payback.
I was drawn to it because The Babadook's Jennifer Kent wrote and directed it, and The Babadook is one of the best movies ever. Suffice [it] to say that The Nightingale is no Babadook, and that's too bad.
Lots of good performances, but between the glacial pacing and awful brutality, it's just a really hard film to recommend. Unless, of course, you're a glutton for punishment with too much time on your hands.
