Lemme give you three perspectives:
1. First, the four ladies with whom I saw it loved it.
2. Second, the teen with whom I saw it thought it was "Okay, but not great."
3. A dear friend, when asked, said it was—in a word—"Interesting."
As for me, I thought it was a schmaltzy, cringeworthy contrivance. It felt like an NBC production, and an anachronism.
But I chalk that up to missed expectations. I expected a somewhat true to life historical feature (I don't know why) and got, instead, a modern musical, something on the order of Fame + This Is Us + 21 Jump Street, with Zac Efron doing his darndest High School Musical revue, and Zendaya substituting for Vanessa Hudgens. (Zero hint of La La Land excellence, despite the hype.)
Alas, there you have it: art. One man's treasure, and all that. Different strokes for different folks.
