I liked it.
The film opens in 1916 at The Battle of the Somme, then proceeds backward in time.
Act I's set-up is intriguing, fun, and very unique.
Act II runs a bit flat, dominated mostly by a mysterious stranger in town and fog rising from moors surrounding everyone's homes in a small village at the turn of the century.
Act III could have run any which way, and its chosen direction felt rather underwhelming.
Very much like Inventing Anna, after so much emotional investment in The Cursed, I hoped for more but didn't quite get it.
Anthropoid was similarly written and directed by Sean Ellis, and I think it's just going to take another movie or two before he has confidence in doing more with less.
Creature features are among the trickiest to effectively 'bring to life,' so let's stay tuned and see what and how he delivers next.
