I cannot believe these words shall pass through my fingertips, but here goes: Sonic the Hedgehog is a very good movie and I loved it.
After last year’s dustup with die-hards regarding early leaks of Sonic’s ‘controversial’ hands, shoes, and face (!), and a disastrously cringeworthy first trailer, I anticipated a dumpster fire.
I stood in the lobby on opening night (expecting countless seats to remain) then began wondering why the line was so dang long and why everyone was so atwitter. Apparently, the studio’s response to the backlash was to go back to the drawing board.
They pulled a rabbit from the hat, no two ways about it.
James Marsden is pitch-perfect. Jim Carrey is 1990s zanymagic. And Ben Schwartz as Sonic is introspective, angsty, interesting, and far from one note.
I had no idea the film would make me laugh and cry, but now that I do, sign me up for the sequel.
