For starters, this was marketed horribly.
Instead of making it appear 100% cheesy, which they did, the creators should have emphasized:
"From the director of Philadelphia and Silence of the Lambs, the writer of Juno, and starring three-time Academy Award winning actress Meryl Streep, with Rick Springfield and the late Rick Rosas in his final screen appearance," then, blammo, I would have been there much sooner, had the opportunity to enjoy it (which I did completely), but knowing well and fully that it would be a good movie, not the waste which they made it appear to be.
It's a sweet movie.
