...and so this guard, and others alongside him, proceeded to throw live children in the ovens in the final days. And, when those ovens overflowed, they threw children in make-shift ovens dug in trenches.

The word is, to me, frightening in and of itself, as it comes from the Greek holokauston ("a thing wholly burnt"), a derivation of holokaustos ("burned whole").
