Never have I ever....
Well, not quite never. I mean, I've seen that guy out of the corner of my eye. I recognize him. Vaguely. From childhood maybe.
But no, I was 99% unfamiliar with this Walter Mercado fella.
So, I reticently dived into this documentary about him, but found myself incredibly moved by it!
He was quite the butterfly, and then reclusive, so to hear his tale from beginning to end was so fascinating.
The ending, in particular, will leave you in tears.
At least, I think it will.
It's a complicated puddle of joy, brokenness, delusion, pity, and liberation.
Not quite sure how to put it in words, but you'll see what I mean if you give it a shot.
Perhaps what touched me most was how adults who grew up watching him grieved his passing.
Weird as he was, he was a staple in their lives, a touchstone, a figure.
And now, he's gone. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust.
