Looked BANANAS, and I was right ;-)
I do hope you see Monkey Man in the theater.
It’s my favorite movie since last winter’s The Holdovers.
It’s wild, bloody, sweaty, grimy, primal, clever, frenetic (like Slumdog Millionaire), mythological, includes a killer propulsive soundtrack, and is as gratifying a hero’s journey as I can recall.
I love how Dev Patel wove in so many “untouchable” castes and elevated them: the crippled, the forgotten, the beaten, the silenced, the marginalized, the poor, the discarded, the exploited, the voiceless, the invisible, the powerless, the hopeless, the different.
The whole shebang felt like John Wick and Slumdog meet Walking Tall and Death Wish.
Executed flawlessly and with such insane PRECISION, I’m gobsmacked it’s Patel’s directorial debut.
If he can do this, he can do anything.
And I hope he will.
I’ve seen it two times now, first in Atlanta then in Dallas, and both times it received whoops, hollers, and standing ovations.
I can’t wait to see it AGAIN!
p.s. Wound up seeing it three more times. I've now had my fill. Adding it now to my Top 100 of all time.
