Captivating.
On the one hand, I really admire and love the guy. Such tremendous devotion to his craft!
On the other hand, he expresses no regrets about being, as he put it, "a stranger to my family" throughout the first 20 years of his marriage.
At 85, Jiro was still relucant to let his 60-year-old son take over the family business. Oh, my! On the bright side, they've spent 40+ years WORKING together, so there is that.
Oh well, the price of being Japan's #1 sushi chef, I suppose.
That quote by David O. McKay rang in my ears: "No other success can compensate for failure in the home.”
Amen.
Jiro retired at age 98 in 2023. Had it not been for his poor health, I doubt he would have.
Here's hoping his two sons make him proud.
More pointedly: Here's hoping they don't feel their dad is the arbiter of their worth.
