Between Euphoria, The White Lotus, Anyone But You, Madame Web, and now Immaculate, you're probably thinking Sydney Sweeney is everywhere—and oversaturated.
Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Having seen neither Euphoria nor The White Lotus, I cannot speak to those first-hand, but she was surprisingly great in Anyone But You, then Madame Web got pummeled at the box office and panned by critics (3.8 on IMDB).
So, hot and cold, it seems, though, to be fair, she's not to blame for Madame Web script rewrites, the majority of which occurred after everyone had signed on to star.
Beyond the subject matter itself, and its marketing, my third greatest reservation is how Sydney might be allowing herself to be positioned and promoted in these early days.
She's young, and I understand conventional wisdom about what sells and what doesn't, but I'd hate to see her reduced, pigeon-holed, or overly typecast in, say, the same way as someone like Natasha Henstridge was (Species, 1995).
It would be nice to see her diversify and do some grittier 'character acting' sorts of roles here and there (like Charlize Theron's 2003 breakout, Monster, about Daytona Beach serial killer Aileen Wuornos), just to keep everyone guessing.
Probably won't happen anytime soon (as neither her agent nor studios will be pushing for such anytime soon), but that's the danger: Getting swept up by buzz, hype and reputation and going with the flow, only realizing after it's too late how long ago one lost sight of the shore.
