A blast! (pun intended)
Dawn and I didn't know what to expect, just needed to get out of the house for a while, so we gave this a shot.
Turns out it's over two hours long and is Japanese dialogue throughout.
I, of course, loved this, but Dawn was thrown for a loop.
BUT—and this tells you everything you need to know about the film—by the end, we were enraptured, on our feet, and cheering and shouting and clapping and laughing.
The film's really propulsive and energizing that way, just like the big lizard himself.
Like many Japanese productions, it's includes a lot of headiness and soul searching.
The title, Minus One, was explained by the fanboy sitting beside me as follows: "After Japan's defeat in World War II, they were leveled to zero. After Godzilla arose, there were below zero...to minus one."
I won't tell you how it ends, but I will tell you what you already know: that Japan lives to fight another day.
p.s. There came a second-run of this film the week following, in black-and-white. Had that been the one we'd stumbled into, Dawn woulda been thrown for three loops ;-) and I probably woulda wound-up watching the film by myself as she waited in the lobby. Fortunately for both of us (!), that was not the case.
