Remember how I always say that I judge a film within its own genre, ecosystem, and intended audience? For example, I don't judge animated kids' movies through the same lens as, say, The Revenant?
Same goes here.
Fall is intended to be a late-August popcorn movie, nothing more, nothing less.
And so, through that lens, it's great.
I flinched, winced, and got squeamish at all the intended plot points.
Granted, I'll forget most of the movie within a matter of days, but it sure was fun on Sunday!
