Conflict Is Not A Bad Word

Successful Navigation from Conflict to Cohesion

For time immemorial, conflict is a constant. Evidence of this fact is everyone we turn, no matter how novel Coronavirus or today’s unorthodox politics may be, polarization and clashes are the order of the day. “Conflict sells,” they say, and even when it’s not our own (Conflict in the Middle East, the headline reads), it triggers—and negative feelings rise within us. Mentally healthy people do not enjoy conflict, and certainly don’t seek to stir it up, but what do we do when we find ourselves dragged into it nonetheless? What do we do when we feel ourselves becoming emotional, angry, scared, confused? Or when we are approached by others to take sides, take a stand, or “fight for me!”

A surprising amount of both our personal and professional success revolves around how we handle (or don’t) conflict in our and others’ lives. Therefore, the goal of Conflict Is Not A Bad Word is focusing on what makes conflict tick, diffusing its emotionality and dispelling fear, as both always ride in the sidecar of conflict—and sometimes they take over. We’ll also explore skill-building for conflict management and resolution so that each of us can take our power back in future situations that might otherwise feel out of our own control.

Each of us can break free from old coping habits we’ve used our entire lives to avoid conflict and fear, and ultimately learn to repurpose fear into a motivator for empowerment and constructive action. Upon completion, participants should feel more confident in their abilities to see conflict more objectively for what it is, understand its anatomy and energy and edges, and be further equipped to walk successfully through differences of agreement surprisingly less scathed.
